These terms cover your use of Sonar, a swim-records tracker for competitive swim clubs. By signing in you agree to them. They are deliberately short.
Who may use Sonar
- Adults — parents, guardians, coaches and club administrators — may hold an account.
- Swimmers aged 13 and over may hold their own account. We ask when you were born, and that is all the age check there is.
- Swimmers aged 12 and under need an approval code from a parent or guardian, described below. There is no other way in, and we would rather turn away a child than collect their email address without an adult knowing.
- Sonar is offered through participating clubs. It is not a public directory, there is nothing here to browse without an account, and if your club is not onboarded there is nothing for you to join.
Approval codes for swimmers 12 and under
- A parent or guardian with a Sonar account issues an eight-digit code for a specific child. The child enters that code and the email address it was issued to.
- We email you when your code is redeemed. If that email arrives and it was not your child, reply to it and we will remove the account.
- Codes last a week and can be reissued as often as you like. Do not post one publicly or give it to a child who is not yours.
- An approval code approves an account. It does not turn on practice tracking and it does not authorise us to collect health data — that is a separate, paid-for decision described under Subscriptions.
Your account
Sign-in is by a code emailed to you, so your email address is your account. Do not share access to it. Tell us if you think someone else has it.
Claiming a swimmer requires verifying their date of birth against the club roster. Do not attempt to claim a swimmer who is not your own child or yourself. Attempting to do so is a misuse of the service and we will remove the account.
Whose data is whose
Race results, rosters and time standards come from clubs and governing bodies. They remain the club's records. Sonar organises and displays them; it does not own them, and deleting your account does not remove them.
Anything you add yourself — a display name, a photo, a report you file — is yours, and you can remove it.
Subscriptions
- Meet results, personal bests and progress toward standards are free, and are intended to stay free.
- Sonar shows your last 7 practices. Reading them from your watch and drawing them on your phone is free and stays free. Those practices are not uploaded to us, and the older ones are not deleted — they remain in Apple Health or Health Connect, where your watch put them. What the free tier limits is how many Sonar draws.
- A subscription adds three things: practices are kept on our servers so they survive a lost phone, history goes back further than the last 7, and a parent can see them.
- One subscription covers a family, however many swimmers are in it. The person who pays is the administrator and can grant read-only access to up to 3 other people. There is one administrator, and changing who it is means contacting us.
- Billing is through the App Store or Google Play, whose terms govern who may transact and how. Price and billing period are shown before you buy.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. Cancel in your Apple ID subscription settings or in Google Play.
- If a subscription lapses we stop recording new practices at once and keep what is already there for 90 days, so a missed payment does not cost you a season. Turning the feature off yourself deletes it immediately instead — that is a decision, and we act on it.
- Deleting your Sonar account does not cancel a subscription and does not entitle you to a refund. Only Apple or Google can cancel or refund a purchase they billed. Cancel first, then delete.
What Sonar does not promise
Sonar reports times as they appear in the documents a club provides, and practice data as a watch reports it. Neither is an official result. For anything that matters — a qualification, an entry, a record — the club and the governing body are the authority, not this app.
Practice tracking depends on a watch, an operating system and a phone that we do not control. Sessions can be missed. We show what we received and try to be honest about what we did not.
Sonar is provided as-is. We do not guarantee it is available at all times or free of errors.
Ending it
You can delete your account at any time from You → Account → Delete account. We may suspend or remove an account that misuses the service, in particular one attempting to access a child it is not connected to.
